Doula FAQ:
Is a Doula the same as a Midwife?
Although we love working side by side with Midwives, we as Doulas are NOT the same thing. A Midwife is a medical provider that provides clinical care throughout pregnancy and postpartum. A Doula is not a medical provider or clinician. As Doulas a part of our job is to provide emotional support, physical comfort measures, and childbirth education.
What are "Prenatals" for?
Prenatals are a great way for you and your Doula to really connect. During these appointments we discuss birth plans, outcomes, and options . We can break down fears and provide childbirth education so you and your family can make informed decisions about your care. Most importantly it provides us the time to really get to know one another before labor begins. Typically they last about 1.5-2hrs.
When do I call for my Doula?
This is a question parents often ask us. The answer is: when you're ready for support. For some families it's from the very first contraction, others it's when a strong labor pattern has been established. We do ask that you give our Doulas as much advance notice as possible but also understand that labor can start at a moments notice. Where ever your family may fall we are are ready to support you when the time comes!
How long will my Doula stay?
For as long as you need us there! Usually once labor has been established we settle in to guide you through your birth. Once baby is born we stay about 2hrs post birth, or when nursing has been established and you are comfortably settled in.
What if it's a false alarm?
Sometimes labor likes to start and stop, and that's ok! We will be there to support you through it either via phone support or coming out for an in person visit. We do not charge extra for these!
What if our Doula misses the birth?
We strive to ensure our Doulas are at a birth in a timely manner. That being said we understand that labor can progress a lot faster than anticipated and that could cause a miss or late arrival. We ask that you give our Doulas as much advance notice as possible. If a birth is missed and the fault lies with one of our Doulas, you may be issued a refund (minus the non-refundable deposit)
Placenta Encapsulation FAQ:
What is Placenta Encapsulation
Encapsulation is the process in which your placenta is prepared, dehydrated, and turned into a powder to be placed into a pill for consumption. The process is done in a safe and clean manner to ensure clients receive optimal benefits. After the process is complete it will be delivered to the comforts of your home along with detailed dosage instructions.
Is it safe?
Yes! Our Specialist have trained professionally and maintain their blood borne pathogens certification and state food and handling safety license. Each placenta is processed at the perfect temperature to ensure proper dehydration for consumption.
Can I do it if i test GBS+
Yes! Because we process placentas at the proper temperature, GBS+ clients can enjoy the benefits of encapsulation
What do I need for encapsulation?
We require clients to provide a cooler for transport (a Styrofoam or a personal plastic one), and a container to place the placenta in (*some hospitals provide a container)
When do I need to contact the specialist for pick up?
We like for clients to contact our specialists as soon as they are in labor or begin the induction or cesarean process. However if birth happens more rapidly than predicted we ask that you give our specialist a minimum of 2hrs to get to your location for pick-up
How long does the process take?
Our turn around time is between 48-72hrs. We do have a first come first serve basis and if your placenta will be delayed longer than 72hrs from pick-up we will inform you.
How many pills will i get?
The amount varies from placenta to placenta but the average is between 80-120.
what makes my placenta unqualified for encapsulation?
If your placenta has to be sent to pathology we cannot process it for consumption. You may request that your provider only send a portion off to pathology and hold the rest until it is cleared. If they are unable to do so you may be eligible for a partial refund (minus the $50.00 deposit)
How often do i take my pills?
Upon delivery, our Specialists will go over a detailed dosage guideline and answer any questions you may have.
what method(s) of encapsulation do you offer?
At Mountain City Birth we offer two different encapsulation methods. Raw & Traditional Chinese Method
What is the difference between the methods?
We offer two processes at MCB. “Raw” and “Traditional Chinese Method”
Raw is where we rinse the placenta and dehydrate. The belief behind this is it increases iron levels tremendously since the blood is not drained, thus giving you more energy.
Traditional Chinese Method (TCM) is where we drain the placenta and steam it with ginger and lemon. Ginger and lemon are wonderful aids in decreasing inflammation and increasing healing.
Both methods aid in increasing milk supply, decreasing the "Baby Blues", and overall promote a smoother recovery.
